The Exhibition Barn at Astrup Farm

Jølstravatnet, Sunnfjord, Norway, Competition

Nikolai Astrup is a prominent figure in Norwegian art, celebrated for his unique style and deep connection to nature. Growing up by Jølstravatnet lake, he developed a strong bond with the landscape, which influenced his creative work throughout his life. His paintings, rich with childhood memories, folk traditions, and dramatic landscapes, invite us into his enchanting world.

The Exhibition Barn at Astruptunet bridges history and the present, telling the story of Nikolai Astrup while providing a learning space for all ages. Inspired by Norwegian landscapes and traditional architecture, it integrates naturally with Astruptunet and Jølstravatnet, serving as a gathering and exhibition center. Constructed from wood and a structural stone core, the barn connects the old and new farms. Inspired by Japanese woodcuts, Astrup's stories are carved into the wood, forming part of the facade elements. The barn's design ensures accessibility and respects the natural landscape.

Using natural materials, the barn merges traditional and modern building practices. It comprises three floors: Upon entering from Nikolai Astrup's road, you find a gathering room and café with views of the mountain landscape, ideal for enjoying coffee or attending lectures about Astrup and the surroundings. Descending from the gathering room, the exhibition room features exposed wooden structures, a controlled climate, indirect lighting, and views of Jølstravatnet. It introduces Astrup's life and work. The first floor includes an entrance from Fylkesveien, a workshop, cloakroom facilities, and a core with restrooms, an elevator, and storage.

The barn harmonizes with its surroundings using local materials like stone and wood. Its design allows for future adaptability, with natural light, ventilation, and energy-efficient systems such as geothermal heating and solar panels. The natural materials promote well-being, reflecting Astrup's love for nature.
