Loft Transformation

Nørrebro, Copenhagen, Denmark, Private Residence

The project comprises a comprehensive transformation of an apartment at Rantzausgade, where an originally compact dwelling has gained a new spatial dimension through the incorporation of the attic level.

The point of departure for the project was to unlock the apartment’s existing potential and to establish clear, robust solutions using natural materials. The architectural strategies are designed to function effortlessly in everyday life while maintaining a timeless quality - forming a durable framework for long-term living.

A modern yet warm wooden core in Douglas fir has been introduced as a central element of the apartment. The core accommodates the dwelling’s primary functions and creates a strong spatial connection between the two levels.

Along the building’s gable wall, the kitchen and built-in storage are arranged as a continuous linear sequence. The kitchen integrates a dishwasher, oven and cooktop, refrigerator, sink cabinet, and washing machine within a simple and highly functional layout.

Adjacent to the neighboring apartment, a new staircase - an efficient samba staircase - has been designed in combination with an integrated shelving system for books, as well as storage for outerwear and shoes beneath the steps. The staircase serves as both a functional and spatial link between the two floors.

The loft volume is positioned above the functions on the fifth floor, with the samba staircase unifying the two levels in a clear architectural movement. The form of the loft follows the language of the staircase and cabinetry below. This level accommodates the sleeping area, including the bed and built-in wardrobes for clothing storage.

The bathroom is designed to be bright and spacious and is intended to be finished in a light green tone, either in ceramic tiles or natural stone. The shower area is placed at the far end of the room, facing the window toward Rantzausgade, which is fitted with a new layer of frosted glass to protect against water exposure and ensure privacy. The window reveal is clad in tiles, and a small integrated niche provides seating.

The washbasin and toilet are wall-mounted, ensuring ease of access and cleaning. An integrated mirrored cabinet further contributes to an efficient and functional bathroom.

The project is grounded in natural materials, high craftsmanship, and solutions designed for longevity. The result is a compact dwelling with a clear and open spatial coherence, where the architectural interventions support everyday use and create a robust, well-functioning framework for contemporary urban living.
